    But Maricel Maffini, a biochemist and independent consultant, said the FDA is bound to a legal provision called the Delaney Clause, which prohibits any food additive with evidence of carcinogenic effects in animals or humans, regardless of the dose. The provision assumes “that even a single molecule of a carcinogen could cause cancer,” Maffini said, so when it comes to allowing such compounds in food, the answer is “no — period.”

    Pretty sure red meats have been shown to increase cancer rates.
