In half the country, sex offense civil commitment incarcerates people after they complete their prison sentences.

Hang on, this doesn’t make sense. We have huge problems with incarceration in the US, yes, but this article leads with Padrón violating his parole. Yes, it was probably a bullshit violation, but if he was on parole, that means he hadn’t completed his sentence.

He was late getting home to his halfway house… not really something to be punished if it happens once. Hell, they’re adults, and having a curfew is kinda stupid.

Exactly, nothing that justifies indefinite jailing. Doing a weekend in jail or something would be fair but life in prison for being late is nonsense.

MSOP opened in 1995. For the next 20 years, the program did not release a single person. Almost a hundred people, however, have died inside. Ruby Brewer, a therapist who resigned after three years working at MSOP, told The Appeal that staff sometimes refer to the deaths of the people confined there as “graduations.”

These places are, allegedly, treatment centers but have failed to rehabilitate a single person in 20 years?

They’re not, they’re simply a way to give someone life in prison without calling it that.

Pedophile punishment is the most red meat thing you can feed to voters. Even voters who aren’t sexist and racist so don’t want to go after women’s rights or immigration will gladly support more punishment for pedophiles. Heck, people don’t even want accused pedophiles to get due process. They will justify vigilantism.

That attitude was all over Reddit. Wouldn’t surprise me if it were here too, but I can’t think of specific instances.
